Too alarmist or not alarming enough? Is doomsday just around the corner or have we managed to turn things around with our electric cars, solar panels and wind turbines? Where exactly are we at? The average global temperature has increased by 1.1° Celsius since 1880. The aim of the Paris Agreement in 2015 was to limit global warming to well below 2°C by the end of the century. Unfortunately, almost no countries are actually on track to meet that goal. Scientists predict that the earth’s temperature will have increased by 3°C by the end of century.
While we may not be approaching an apocalyptic scenario of an increase of 5°C , we’re still not heading towards a world we want to leave future generations with. The IPCC report was clear about it. The more earth’s temperature rises, the more extreme weather events we’ll get. More frequent heat waves, worse floods, more intense hurricanes, more prolonged droughts… We need to do better. We need more ambitious actions. We need better climate policy. We can actually solve this problem if we can collectively get our act together.

British Petroleum promoted the term “carbon footprint” to make you think that climate change is not being caused by oil giants. They unveiled their “carbon footprint calculator” in 2004 to put the focus on personal impact. While all of our individual choices do add up in the fight against climate change, we should not lose sight of the bigger picture. We need to exit the age of fossil fuels and reinvent our energy landscape. We need oil companies to be on board.

Confession time: I don’t like bamboo toothbrushes. I know that a lot of people swear by them, but I just don’t like the feeling of wood rubbing against my cheeks. Luckily there are other sustainable toothbrushes available! I’m using one with a removable brush head. You keep the handle, and just switch out the head from time to time. I bought it at @OHNE Gent . If you’re like me, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Global temperatures have risen 1.1°C since pre-industrial times, and are heading towards 1.5°C. The more the temperature rises, the more we will be exposed to life-threatening heat and humidity. To prevent this from happening, world leaders have to come up with concrete actions.
Lobbyists are people paid by organisations to influence political decisions and steer the debate. There are 636 fossil fuel lobbyists at COP27. Having oil and gas lobbyists at a climate conference is like having tobacco lobbyists at a health conference. It’s counterproductive and will delay the implementation of real action. It’s time to kick big polluters out of climate talks!

Poison Eve! Inspired by the Batman supervillain Poison Ivy, of course. How did I make this Halloween costume in a sustainable way?
- The top was thrifted at @kringwinkelateljee.
- I already had the boots and shorts.
- I used real leaves that will decompose. I can remove the leaves and add new ones if I ever want to dress up as Poison Eve again. Make sure to check if you’re not allergic if you use any kind of leaf. I know Halloween is supposed to be scary, but you don’t want that kind of scare. Kids, only use a hot glue gun under parental supervision!
- For the modeling wax I mixed 1,5 teaspoon of flour and 0,5 teaspoon of lip balm (from the sustainable brand @cime.skincare). Play around with the mixture: if it’s too sticky, add more flour. If it crumbles too much, add more lip balm. Then I added some foundation (sustainable brand: @und_gretel_cosmetics).
