recently i had the chance to collaborate with wonderful/brilliant poet Mackenzie Duan, adapting their poem into an animation through Counterclock Lit Magazine’s “Patchwork: Film x Poetry” 9-week interdisciplinary arts fellowship. 💙
to animate this, i experimented with mixing various handcrafted/physical mediums including oil pastels, window markers, graphite, charcoal, and watercolor paints, working frame-by-frame on both glass and paper and then layering images together to create a cohesive whole that flows, echoes, and overlaps with itself, harmonizing with the poem’s aching heart.
Mackenzie and i inspired one another as we went, thinking deeply about each other’s work and discussing ideas throughout the process to make something that represented both our artistic perspectives, and i think something special came from that place of mutual respect.
the film and poem coexist in companionship, each allowing space for the other to breathe while generating meaningful new dimensions through their intersection, like I believe we did as collaborators.

recently i made this 7-minute animated documentary drawing from audio recordings of my Great-Great-Grandma—a person born in 1897 whom I never met, but admire greatly for her lifetime of breaking gendered rules and for being, as my grandma puts it in the film, “a feminist before that was a common term.”
the excerpts I used came from two sources: 1) a two-hour long 1978 oral history interview with Dr. Kenneth Rock at Colorado State University, which is included as part of CSU’s “Germans from Russia in Colorado” special collection, and 2) a 45-minute long 1983 video interview conducted by my Great-Aunt Jean Bethke Elshtain (Mary’s granddaughter).
