"GUTAI" Gutai means "the current concrete proof of our free spirits”. Gutai refers to the Gutai Art Association, the first avant-garde group of postwar artists in Japan, founded in 1954 by the painter Jiro Yoshihara in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, with the motto "Don't imitate others.” Under the charismatic leadership of Yoshihara, the young artists focused on pursuing new possibilities in art.
