The "Great Famine" or the "Irish Potato Famine" ... these common expressions refer to one of the most tragic events in modern Irish history, which happened between 1845 and 1852, and led to the death of a million people as well as the departures of millions of Irish emigrants, mainly to North America.
However, Paul from the Jeanie Johnston explains why this pivotal event is known as the Great Hunger in Ireland (“An Gorta Mór” in Gaeilge).

We hope you had a fantastic time celebrating St Patrick's Day these past few days!
If you were in Dublin, we also hoped you swang by EPIC The Irish Emigration to find out what Irishness is truly about.
Ps. Don't worry – visitors greeting us saying "Top o' the morning to ye" or wearing leprechaun hats, shamrock glasses and other St. Patrick's attire will always be welcomed with open arms in our museum 😉

Famine ships were particularly grim places and were often referred to as “Coffin Ships”. They saw many deaths due to their unseaworthy nature, overcrowding, lack of clean drinking water, unsanitary conditions and the rampant spread of disease.
However, the Jeanie Johnston was an exception in that she never lost a single passenger or crew member during her 16 transatlantic crossings. But what did the owner of the Jeanie Johnston, Nicholas Donovan, do differently?

Unlike many Famine ship owners who tended to live in places less affected by the Famine, such as Dublin or Belfast, Nicholas Donovan, the owner of the Jeanie Johnston, lived in Kerry. Kerry lost nearly a fifth of its population in the mid-19th century, making the county one of the hardest hit by the Famine.
While some ship owners could see the Famine as a business opportunity to make money by carrying as many people in these ships as possible, Donovan's motives seemed more humanitarian. As an inhabitant of Kerry and a direct witness to the devastating consequences of the Famine, he knew some of the passengers who embarked on the Jeanie and was eager to see them survive, which explained the measures he took to ensure this goal.

As one of Ireland's main Patron Saints alongside St. Patrick and St. Colmcille, St. Brigid has always been an essential figure in Irish culture from pre-Christian Ireland to the present day. But did you know that Brigid's influence spreads outside of Ireland?

Travelling during the Famine contrasts strikingly with our modern experience. Although they were the cheapest way to leave the Island for many Irish emigrants in the 19th century, Famine ships were overcrowded and disease-ridden.
When embarking, most passengers were already in poor health, and thousands lost their lives because of the unsanitary living conditions onboard these ships.
