𝑺𝒗𝒂𝒅𝒉𝒚𝒂𝒚𝒂 (𝑺𝒆𝒍𝒇-𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒚) ✨
The fourth Niyama, or guideline for inner peace is 𝑺𝒗𝒂𝒅𝒉𝒚𝒂𝒚𝒂, which means Self-Study. This is the principle that encourages us to deepen our yoga practice way beyond the mat.

By studying our own habits and patterns we take a closer look at how our thoughts and beliefs shape our lives. We start to recognize what we really are and also what we are not, or do not want to be. We start to see how some of our behaviors don’t really align with our true purpose and can even cause us harm. Maybe we have been following mainstream ideas because they are popular, even if they do not serve our highest Self.

𝑺𝒗𝒂𝒅𝒉𝒚𝒂𝒚𝒂 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐 𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆, 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝑷𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆.

This is why yogis are encouraged to reflect and journal often. It’s one thing to read about the path to enlightenment, but you reach a whole new level when you dive in and can apply the teachings. Your mind opens to new possibilities when you can look within with a deeper understanding of why you do the things you do.

Svadhyaya requires a new level of paying attention, being able to question and identify your own intentions. Most people avoid questioning their own actions, as it implies change, and that means more work, and we don’t often like that! AND we know that change is inevitable, and you can either drive it or get run over by it!

If you know me, you know it took me a LONG TIME to get where I am today! Every time i seem to have it under control, I get blindsided and have to start all over again. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way to help me find balance...

#𝟏 𝐃𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠
I know you’re too busy and exhausted, and have a million other things to do...but just do the thing you’re supposed to do. Not only will you feel better, but you build will power and positive momentum if you just do the thing...

#𝟐 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟
Like on your calendar. Those days you are unavailable for whatever work or shenanigans they bring. It’s important to check out. You don’t need a plan or a reason.
The office is closed.

#𝟑 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞
Give yourself plenty of sunshine and water. It’s critical to your survival. You’re basically a complicated house plant. You don’t want to wilt do you?

#𝟒 𝐃𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤
Spend 15 minutes a day on enrichment. That could be reading a book, or researching a vacation, or looking up a subject of interest, or getting a new certification.
Better yourself.

#𝟓 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬
Always have something fun on your calendar to look forward to. It can be coffee with a friend, or a hike you’ve planned, or whatever sounds fun to you. It just can’t be a someday thing..
It’s on the schedule.

#𝟔 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬
It’s not your face or your waist that are attractive. It’s how you light up a room. And you can’t see that in the mirror, or buy it with fashionable products. You do you.

Sleep is alot more important than you think it is. This is when your body heals and regenerates. Make it a priority to get at least 8 hours a night. That show you want to binge will still be there the next day, your optimal health tho....

Trust me, you love your coffee way more than it loves you. You don’t need it. You 𝐷𝑂 need to rise and shine and get your body moving to reinforce your circadian rhythms.

#𝟐 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞
Turn your sleeping area into a super cozy retreat. Use tranquil colors and block out excessive light and sounds. Clear out clutter. Invest in a mattress topper, soft sheets and a comfy pillow. This is your dreamscape. It should feel Heavenly!

#𝟑 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥
Alcohol disrupts sleep patterns. You might pass out initially, but you won’t stay asleep. Your body will have to work on liver detox instead of weight maintenance and healing. Plus you’ll wake up in a brain fog and will not perform your best the next day.

#𝟒 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞
At least 30 minutes before bed shut it all down. Stop doing chores and work. Turn off the screens. Stop the scroll. Make a warm cup of tea, grab a book, settle in and relax. This consistent ritual signals your brain that it’s times to switch gears.

#𝟓 𝐍𝐨 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦
Here’s the thing, screens stimulate your brain waves. That’s why you’re so addicted. Keep them out of the bedroom so your brain can do it’s thing and you can optimize your healing and growth.

By setting a healthy sleep practice you give yourself the best chance to reach your health and weight goals.

For millennia people celebrated the Autumn Equinox. It was harvest time, the fruit of their labors had finally arrived! The working days were shorter and they could spend more time with family and friends enjoying the beautiful autumn days. Why don't we do that anymore?

The Autumn Equinox is one of nature's gentle reminders of the circle and seasons of life. As the days and nights find balance, we too find balance in our lives. The seeds you planted, whether in your garden, or your health or career or relationships or elsewhere in your life come to fruition now. All the hard work finally pays off!

It's time to find balance and harmony in our daily lives before we enter the new season of quiet healing that the Winter offers.

So how can we honor this special time? Well obviously pumpkin spice is a thing!! Did you know pumpkin, all spice, and cinnamon were originally used to keep evil spirits at bay? So feel free to have another!

Every Fall, I honor the changing of the seasons and abundance of the Earth by taking my family for a farm visit. We spend the whole day navigating corn mazes, enjoying hay rides, and supporting the farmers by buying produce, flowers, and pumpkins! It's a wonderful family adventure that we look forward to every year. If you haven't gone to visit one of the local farms you should! There's nothing quite like a day in the country!

Do not. Hot Power is a deep toxic purge meant to be practiced quarterly, not daily. Chances are you will dehydrate and stress your Nervous System causing all kinds of health issues. Stick to Cool Flow and Yin daily.

Just no. With the exception of a challenging class followed by a stretch class. Otherwise it’s just too much and will wear and tear your body. One Flow class taught properly is plenty.

No you don’t. I mean you should lol. But how you apply the lessons depends on where you are on your path. Any enlightenment is better than no enlightenment. Think for yourself.

Most Yoga Instructors are good hearted and trying to help you. Some are just trying to fill classes. In case of the latter, roll up your mat and find a new studio.
