I was making a cup of tea for the farrier last week when he asks ‘so why do you like to run 100+ miles?’
For me, it’s not a simple answer…
🏔️ I love the adventure - there’s nothing more like packing up your running kit and taking yourself for a 100 mile run with only a few aid stations on the way for support. You carry everything you need on your back, and keep moving forward through day and night.
✅ I love the sense of accomplishment. You spend hours, weeks, months of your life training for something, you start running and battle the elements, in race issues, feeling like your body is slowly breaking 😬 and when/if you finally get to the finish line you can’t help but feel elated.
👦🏼👦🏼 I want to show my kids that they can achieve hard things if they put in the effort. Sometimes, even if it feels out of your reach, it’s still worth a go.
🎂 The mountains of cake I can eat before during and after 😊

Do you run strides? 🏃
They are a great way to add some variety into your training particularly if you are:
- New to running
- Nervous about adding in big speed sessions but want to start somewhere
- Feel like you aren’t getting any faster
- Want to help protect yourself from injury
- Just want to remember how to run fast!
The great thing about them is that you can stick them in the middle or end of an easy run, you only need to run 4-6 of them and you get a big walk break in-between each one. Win win!
How to run them:
Ensure you have run a good 20-30 mins to be fully warmed up
Find a flattish section of road or trail
Start running your strides as follows
0-5 seconds accelerate
5-25 seconds run fast focusing on your form (tall posture, shoulders relaxed, core engaged, pendulum driving arms 90 degrees at the elbow and feet landing beneath you)
Decelerate and walk for 2 minutes
Repeat x 5
*I am recovering from a bad sprain and wanted to add them in to see how my ankle felt at a higher intensity. If you are injured DO consider waiting to do these until you are recovered, take care and seek advice from a professional if needed.

Why I prioritise a walk over a run 🚶🏼♀️
Walking is important for all runners. It activates your lower body muscles and gets you mobile and moving. As well as the physical benefits sometimes I just have to get out for a walk instead of a run. I can feel ‘runners guilt’ that I’m not running but I have to remind myself that rest or active recovery is incredibly important…
🤕 Today I’m recovering from injury and have cut down my running miles but sometimes…
🛌 My kids have woken me up at the crack of dawn and I just can’t stomach a run yet
🩸I might be in that time in my cycle when running feels harder
👟 I have a hard run tomorrow and I want to get the most out of it by being fully recovered before I start
🙅🏼♀️ I just don’t feel like it!
Why do you walk?

Now I’m not one to worry too much about being matchy matchy or colour coordinated BUT when you are new to running and you need every bit of motivation you can get then having a pair of shoes you like the look of and want to stick on your feet is a big help!
OBVS if you have a history of lower leg / foot problems or injury please get advice from your Doc/physio etc etc.
You get my point. Happy feet, happy head, happy runner 😀

My NUMBER 1 tip for people who have a place in the 2024 TCS London Marathon.
⭐️ Build consistent habits NOW
Come January when you start your marathon training block, if you aren’t already a runner you might find you need to rearrange your week to fit all the runs in. Just getting the time to get out the door is THE biggest barrier to reaching those goals (IMO).
☀️ Early riser? Get out before work.
🌝 Night owl? Practice your evening run routes while it’s still light out.
Figure out when you can get those training runs in NOW, clear it with work, family, whoever it is going to affect in your life and it’s one less thing to worry about come the New Year.
Feel like you’ve bitten off more than you can chew? Comment me any questions you have 👇👇👇

Normal runner vs. Buggy runner
I mean I love buggy running - it saved my training and my mental health during a pandemic. But let’s face it, it takes approximately 4 years to get everyone and everything in the buggy to get out the door.

If you don’t know what hashing is you need to look up your local friendly hash club. Hashing has always been a big part of my running journey and it’s very different to your typical running or athletics club!
I joined my club when I was only 12 and it wasn’t until I met my husband 10 years later that I fell into ultra running.
The Lake District is my favourite place to run and in fact five of my 100 mile finishes are at Lakeland 100.
Strawberry laces are a must for my ultra drop bag, and I mean the thin ones not pencils or twists 🍓🍓🍓

I bookended the summer holidays by twisting each of my ankles badly. Just when I thought the left was recovered, off goes the right. A short trip to minor injuries showed it wasn’t broken but it’s been a lot of resting to get to a stage where I can run/walk the dog for 15 minutes - 10seconds run/30sec walk. PLUS ankle mobility exercises to get things moving.
Thankfully there’s no big races on the horizon (other than XC season looming 😬)

For all my friends who this week signed up for their first Lakeland 50 or 100 😬 I wanted to share this message 👆
Like Jack says in that movie…’life is fleeting’. Go and sign up for the thing. Learn all about it, take a deep breath and have a go. Because life is too short to worry about what will happen if you fail.

Monday morning miles. Grateful I had put my waterproof picnic blanket in the buggy when I heard the thunder rolling above us only a mile in 🌩️
I’m taking part in the virtual Lakeland 100 this week so its going to be a race to get the miles in before the summer holidays start.
