Dr. Stokes started a three-year contract in July 2021 in the Fishers, Indiana school district. Stokes was the district’s first Black superintendent, and her hiring was contentious from the start. Indiana’s version of Moms for Liberty protested her hire with signs that said things such as "qualified staff matters," "education not indoctrination" and "teach our kids how to think not what to think." She also faced pushback for diversity and inclusion efforts.

Remembering history is not just about the past; it's about building a better future. We must continue to acknowledge the pain, suffering, and genreational impact endured by African people during chattel slavery, just as we remember the Jewish Holocaust and the Indigenous genocide. By discussing and teaching these dark chapters honestly, we pave the way for understanding, healing, and a more just world. #HistoryMatters #NeverForget #SocialJustice
I continue to pray for the impossible. The collective recognition that we are all connected. That every careless action carries a consequence. But in the same vain…every act of love carries the potential of healing. Be light for a dark world. Be love for the stranger. Recognize your connection to something greater.

President Museveni Apologizes To African Descendants For Slavery. In this age of fear, book banning, rejecting robust history lessons, and the CRT boogie monster could you imagine the US and its leaders being so humble? Admitting to the truth of this nation’s original sin? Praying that if I don't live to see the day…my children might.

@Katie Phang does a wonderful job of breaking down the history of college education, former president Ronald Reagan’s desire to remove “undesirables” from college campuses, and #affirmativeaction (some of which I cover in my book, “𝗔 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲”). This nation’s legislative history tells endless stories of anti-blackness that often forces its European descendants to cut off their nose to spite their face. A once free, or in some cases low-cost, opportunity for higher education has run up trillions in student debt…all in an effort to keep Black and African Americans out.

Hey TikTok, let's take a moment to unpack something serious: the impact of negative media portrayals on the Black community, both historically and today. From harmful stereotypes in early films, to biased news reporting, these depictions influence perceptions and perpetuate inequalities. It's time you demand better representation that uplifts, not diminishes. Share your thoughts and join the conversation. #fyp #TrueRepresentation #MediaInfluence #bias
Let’s talk about an essential aspect of our workplaces - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) in hiring practices. It’s not just a buzzword, but a commitment to creating a workforce that not only better reflects our diverse society, but also provides equal opportunities for everyone.
Here’s how we can make strides in this area:
• Broaden Outreach - Reach out to different communities, colleges, and social groups when we’re hiring. This ensures we’re not missing out on great talent that might not come through conventional channels.
• Unconscious Bias Training - Regular training can help us recognize and minimize these biases, ensuring they don’t influence our hiring decisions.
• Implement Blind Hiring - Consider practices like blind applications which hide demographic information, focusing only on the candidate’s skills and experience.
• Build an Inclusive Culture - Diversity and equity are crucial, but so is inclusion. We need to cultivate a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and free to contribute their best.
• Set Goals and Measure Progress - Words have very little value if we can’t back what is said. What gets measured gets improved. Set clear DE&I goals, track our progress, and hold ourselves accountable.
Every step we take brings us closer to that goal.
