Learn the facts about COVID-19
Could strapping a bright, micro-OLED screen to our eyeballs 👀 damage our eyes over time? 🤔
Well, we already know that increased digital screen time is linked to:
✅ dry eye syndrome
✅ eye strain & headache
✅ nearsightedness
(COVID lockdown studies review Wong et al. AJO 2021 PMID: 32738229)
But the long-term effects of daily screen usage (particularly blue light exposure from computer-distance and now super-close proximity from a VR headset) on our eyes are still TBD. This is especially important research for our kids whose young eyes are still developing and getting barraged by digital screens over a lifetime.
I applaud @Apple for adding in features to help curb the myopia epidemic (over 50% of the world will become nearsighted by 2050), and for developing technology with the potential to help so many patients (e.g. screening for eye diseases, augmenting eyesight for low-vision patients with glaucoma, ARMD, etc).
But for a revolutionary device that could transform the way we live, we definitely need more research on its potential effects on our eye health 👀🔬. What do you think? 🤔
