๐Ÿ“Biotin aka vitamin B7 or vitamin H is a water-soluble vitamin that can be found in nuts, legumes, whole grains, unpolished rice, and egg yolk, chicken and cheese. Biotin forms enzyme complexes involved in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and amino acid catabolism. It is also involved in keratin production, BUT there is a lack of evidence proving that biotin GROWS hair and nails.

So, how do you know if you are deficient? You can get a blood test. Deficiencies can occur genetically or it can be acquired for example eating raw eggs, certain medications ie isotretinoin and anticonvulsant medications (valproic acid), prolonged use of oral antibiotics, pregnancy, and alcoholism.

If you decide to take Biotin take the recommended amount of 30 to 70mcg per day. Too much biotin can interfere with lab results such as troponins, 25-OH vitamin D, human chorionic gonadotropin, thyroid hormones, hepatitis and HIV.

Biotin helps keep the skin, nails and hair healthy because it is involved in keratin synthesis. My recommendation, if you have a deficiency in biotin, it is okay to take the supplements. Otherwise, consume the foods that I mentioned.
