@Zoey Another great reminder! Thanks to hygiene and antibiotics, problematic infections are rare. But I would still be cautious when dealing with anything on this part of the face, and see your doctor if you're not sure what to do.

For all you medical nerds out there, the collection of blood vessels in this region closely connect to the cavernous sinus. So when the cavernous sinus gets swollen, that's when symptoms like a stroke can occur (different nerves may get compressed). Other consequences include meningitis, brain abscess, and infected blood clots.

Replying to @itsariaine In summary, topical retinoid use does not appear to cause harm to a nursing infant. Yay! But because data is still limited, I recommend having this discussion with your dermatologist so that you can make an informed decision.

#stitch with @ClaudiaRavioli Another frequently asked question that makes for a great reminder!

I come across this topic when seeing patients with painful pus-filled bumps on or around the lips. But there are some basic differences. Derms have other tools to get the right diagnosis if it’s really difficult to tell clinically. If there is any concern for herpes, I definitely recommend seeing a dermatologist because the treatment can definitely decrease the duration and symptoms of a herpes breakout.

#CeraVePartner I had the privilege to teach at Cerave’s 2023 Acne Academy and shared the stage with some amazing guests (@charli d’amelio , @Zach King , @DermDoctor | Dr. Shah , @Evan Rieder MD ) to dispel some myths and misconceptions surrounding acne. I then teamed up with @Dr. Dustin Portela to “knock out” some acne myths 🥊 😄. You can both effectively treat and and nourish your skin with @CeraVe acne control line. #CeraVe #ClearItUpLikeADerm #CeraVeAcneAcademy

@Hill Reminder that Herpes simplex virus (AKA herpes or fever blisters) is very common!

HSV Type 1 typically causes fever blisters and sores in the mouth, where as Type 2 causes genital herpes. But either type can occur in either location! Once you have herpes, it lives in your body forever. It is only contagious when you are having an active outbreak. But sometimes these breakouts can be minor or asymptomatic, so be very cautious when sharing foods or drinks with others or when kissing.

Fortunately there are good prescriptions (specifically valacyclovir) that can keep it under control. You usually can detect symptoms, like tingling or a burning sensation prior to an outbreak, so that is the best time to start taking medicine. #dermatologist #herpes #hsv #feverblisters #coldsores #drmamina #skintok

#stitch with @GINA 🎀 Reminder that Seborrheic Dermatitis is one of the most common conditions we see in derm. It can affect all ages.

It's related to yeast that naturally lives on our skin - the yeast feeds on the skin's oil and the byproduct is inflammation and flaking. This is why anti-yeast ingredients (ketoconazole, zinc, selenium sulfide) help
