Labor issues are in the public consciousness in the US today in a way they haven’t been in years, with the WGA & SAG-AFTRA strikes and other major union actions and negotiations. Such issues were a significant part of Dewey’s political thought and activism, and over the next several days, we’ll be sharing some of his writings about labor, unions, and worker’s rights. This image: Philosoraptor asks, “Do not the usual phenomena attending strikes show us that the ordinary legal forms are just a kind of curtain drawn politely over the conflicts of force which alone are decisive?” - John Dewey. “Force and Coercion.” The Middle Works, 1899-1924: Volume 10, 1916-1917. Edited by Jo Ann Boydston. Southern Illinois University Press, 1980: pp. 244.

In Fall 2023, the Center for Dewey Studies Reading Group will focus on Human Nature and Conduct: An Introduction to Social Psychology (1922). Email DeweyCenter@siu.edu to join.
According to Murray G. Murphey's introduction to the critical edition, this is the "work in which Dewey sought to make explicit the social character of his psychology and philosophy—something which had long been evident but never so clearly spelled out."
Human Nature and Conduct is also a key statement of his naturalism in the middle period, and develops his inquiry-oriented ethical theory, grounded in his naturalistic social psychology.
