The Rent is the opening track on Don’t Try. It sets the scene: the world is ending, and we’re watching it happen. There’s a certain feeling I get knowing what we’re capable of and seeing us fail each other over and over, and it sounds like this.

“Don’t Try” is the first record I’ve made where the title came before the music. Everything under the Desert Island Big Band has so far been meticulously thought out and planned so far in advance I’m regularly made fun of for it by those close to me.
This time I thought I’d do the opposite. I rented a cabin deep in the woods for a week with as much equipment as would fit in my car, set up in every room, and wrote. I wanted to see what would happen if I didn’t “try,” but blindly followed my natural inclinations.
What happened was I wrote the most impassioned, inspiring material I ever have. No time to overthink, no time to deliberate. The only question I asked was “does this work?” If yes, I kept it. If no, I didn’t.
I still cry when I listen to this album sometimes—another first. I tapped into something here, and on Nov 17th I hope you’ll feel the same.
