One of the non-music books that I recommend for any musician is The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek. A concert is a finite game, but practice and all the important work before and after is part of an infinite game, where you judge yourself by process and refinement, not just results.

One of the 10 non-music books I recommend for musicians is “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” by Susan Jeffers. It’s counterintuitive but true that waiting for our fear or anxiety to subside before doing the big thing is backwards. The fear goes away WHEN you do it, not before. This is true of performing in public as well as giving an interview as a podcaster!

Here’s one more clip from Episode 40 with Taylor Rossi. If you’re a musician, and prospective clients see your website, does it have what they are looking for, or are you just publishing what you want people to see even if it might not be speaking to those seeking to hire you?

If you’re a musician, and prospective clients see your website, do they see images and text that make it easy to imagine how fun and helpful it would be to have your services? Or is the website just your shrine, your museum of your own accomplishments? This is a big difference between websites that convert clients and ones that don’t.

In this clip from Episode 39 of The Musician Toolkit, I talk about the examples you might see from certain music that you want to avoid if you want to increase your own odds of success. Not having a bad attitude while at the gig is a great first step.

For every several successful musicians who offer blueprints to imitate, there is one who seems to succeed in spite of some traits you SHOULDN’T imitate. It’s tempting to think, “Well, they do it, and they’re doing well. Why should I be different?” In this clip from Episode 39 of The Musician Toolkit, I offer some reasons.

This is a great observation from my guest, David Krosner, on how deciphering the vast majority of rhythms we need to learn can be perceived in groups of 2 or 3.

In practice, it’s a great idea to always do more than you actually need. Sing higher than the highest note of the piece. Prepare the piece faster than the intended tempo. Anytime you can do MORE, you make it easier to relax as you play exactly what you intended.

This week’s episode came from listener questions about composing practice etudes or exercises based on troublesome measures. One of the questions was, “if I’m going to go to all that trouble, wouldn’t it make sense to just practice the original benefit.” This is part of my answer, why creating your own etudes is still a good idea.

When moving to a new area, there’s still no substitute for getting out and meeting people in person, but in 2023 you also need a social presence. This means putting out videos of your performances, listed where prospective collaborators can find you.

If you’re both specific and committed to your goals, you become indistractable. It’s like when you’re watching something riveting on TV and someone in the house steps in front of you. You momentarily lose the image, but you continue to focus until the distraction is gone. (Yes, I misspelled “indistractable” for the video)
