Gummy smile treatment 😬

There are two options for treatment of a gummy smile, which is when the top lip lifts to expose the gums when smiling.
.
The first option is using injections to relax the muscle in the upper lip, also known as levator labii superioris. This can stop the top lip from lifting as highly when smiling, however the treatment takes two weeks to work, needs to be repeated every three months, AND has more variable results.
.
The second option is lip filler. Lip filler, when added to the body of the lip, adds volume which causes the lip to sit lower and exposes less gum. This technique is less effective if only the vermillion border is filled. The benefits with lip filler (and why it is my preferred treatment) are that it lasts up to 1 year, has more predictable results, and therefore there is less fluctuation in the presence of your gummy smile.

All of these treatments should be performed after thorough consultation, and some patients may be suitable for one treatment and not the other. Choose an appropriately qualified doctor to make sure you’re getting the best and safest result for you 💉

For many younger people having anti wrinkle treatment, crows feet is less of a concern than other areas, such as the forehead for example. There are other benefits to treating this area which are less commonly discussed.
.
Relaxing this muscle can allow the eyes to open up, raise the eyebrows, minimise the impact of hooded eyelids, and of course prevent deeper creases developing over time.
.
In many of my patients where crows feet are less of a concern I do lower doses in the lower injections, and increase these going up towards the eyebrow to help to achieve an eyebrow lift.

Again a reminder that preventing a problem before it occurs is beneficial, but you must ensure each treatment is appropriate for you and will get the results you hope to achieve.

Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO) is the name of the muscle which depresses the angles of the mouth. Activity of this muscle can downturn the corners of the mouth (making the mouth look sad ☹️), and it can also lead to deepening of the marionette lines and jowling.

Relaxing this muscle can allow the mouth to take a ‘happier shape’, and it can also be used to prevent the deepening of marionette’s and jowling.
.
In many of my patients where the lower face is a concern, I will treat DAO to relax the muscle and reassess at 2 weeks, before considering dermal filler for marionette lines.

Bunny lines occur as the result of using the nasalis muscle in the nose. This is a wrinkling of the nose that is most commonly seen when smiling/laughing but can also be seen when frowning.

Static lines here can be a telltale sign that someone has been having anti wrinkle injections, as forehead/crows feet may remain smooth whilst the nose has little creases visible.
.
