We’ve been exploring the use of dogs for this highly invasive species for several months and we’ve finally started training some dogs for a pilot project. We had explored coqui frogs last year as a target but had to put that on hold for logistic reasons. We hope to add that target again after we get our LFA project going. #invasivespecies #invasiveants #littlefireant #LFA #conservationdog #workingdog #labradorsoftiktok
We’re doing seabird surveys this week in a`a and pāhoehoe lava environments. Its so essential to have dog booties that not only protect the paws but don’t fall off and don’t cause chafing. We absolutely love these DIY boots. Check out the “how to” video here: https://youtu.be/f6nlipXdB6s

Qana has been a part of our invasive plant program for the last 4 years. She’s extremely motivated and quite good at finding the target plant, devil weed (Chromolaena odorata)! #devilweed #chromolaenaodorata #invasivespecies #invasiveplants #belgianmalinois #belgianmalinoisoftiktok #workingdog #detectiondog #conservationdog

Celebrating Mahina ʻÕlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month) and Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month before it's too late! In this photo, Team Qana is surveying for an invasive plant along the coast of the Big Island. Most recently they've been training for pest rodent detection, which has many applications in the islands.

Rodent detection training means collecting nunerous tiny pieces of scat on a daily basis. Some tricks we’ve learned include waiting for the scat to dry and harden up a bit, using hemostats, and using a flashlight so they’re easier to spot. #rodentsoftiktok #pooparty #poophappens #shithappens #detectiondogtraining
We’re excited to resume rodent detection training in preparation for biosecurity, monitoring of predator-proof exclosures, and post-eradication surveys. What makes it even better is that we’ll be training under the guidance of a rodent detection expert from Working Dogs for Conservation who has implemented biosecurity K9 projects in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, among other locations.

Having fun with templates 😄🐸 Rudi is training to detect invasive coqui frogs on the island of Maui. One of the potential applications is to screen potted plants that are shipped inter-island for live frogs and eggs. #coquifrog #invasivespecies #invasivespeciesremoval #conservationdog #labradorsoftiktok
