Over the next few weeks I’m going to share some fold videos to help get you started, or take your preflat game to the next level.
Today we’re starting with the basic fold. This really couldn’t be simpler. If you can fold your laundry you can do this. Then secure with a nippa or pin.

I cannot believe we’re at a point where it is acceptable, even normal, that disposable nappies result in poo leaks. Like routinely. How did they ever pass user testing?! 🤯
If you want a solution to having to wipe down your baby’s entire back, or even bath them, after a poo, then cloth is your answer.
Fitted correctly then a poo leak is extremely rare (like I can count on one hand how many we’ve had in the last 5+ years). Even with car seats and jumperoos thrown into the mix.

Just because you’re using newborn nappies doesn’t mean you can’t use your BTP boosters.
If you need a bit more absorbency then it’s a great way to use what you might already have. Or if you need to buy boosters then at least you know you’ll be able to continue to use them for the rest of your cloth nappy journey.

a.d| Put simply, an Ai2 is where the absorbency attaches to the waterproof shell with poppers. Great if you don’t like stuffing.
Of course each brand has their own take on this style, I’ve divided them into three main types.
1️⃣ this @Kijani Baby wrap is wipe clean so you can reuse the wrap. A very cost effective way to cloth.
2️⃣ the @Bear Bott Ai2 shell is lined meaning it will almost certainly get wet and need replacing at each nappy change. The inserts quickly snap on.
3️⃣ finally the @Petite Crown Trima is something of a hybrid. The shell is lined (so again can’t be reused) but has a very small amount of absorbency. There’s also a pocket if you wanted to add different/extra absorbency.

If you don’t find the padfold quite right then this could be for you! I’m a big fan of the burrito fold because:
🌯 it’s easier to control the width and length so it works well in every wrap.
🌯 once folded it stays together well so good for prepping in advance.
🌯 I don’t really have any others but I’ve never used the burrito emoji before!

Whether you’re using cloth or disposables, you need to know this!
By placing some fabric (ideally cotton terry) into your nappy, your toddler will feel wet as soon as they wee. The instant feedback creates awareness which helps with potty training.
Here I’ve used a cotton flannel and a cotton reusable wipe. You could try a cut up old towel / tea towel, muslins or even old clothing.
Bonus point that this can also help with flooding which is very common around toilet training age.

Whether you’re putting your knitwear away for the summer, or storing wool nappies for future babies, you’ll want to ensure they’re in perfect condition when you need them again.
🗃️ Give everything a through hand wash. Then ensure items are completely dry (leave in the airing cupboard for a few days if possible as a double check).
🗃️ Place in a sealed but breathable container. Something like a zipped garment bag is perfect. Wool needs to breathe but you want to keep moths out.
🗃️ And on the subject of moths, cedar balls and lavender oil are great natural moth repellents.

What is an AIO?
Put simply it is when the absorbent material is permanently attached to the waterproof layer.
In practice brands each have their own take on what that looks like. But these are the three main categories:
1️⃣ True AIO, absorbency is fully attached. No prep needed.
2️⃣ Absorbency is split between between two parts, normally featuring an additional tongue (still attached) to aid drying time.
3️⃣ Absorbency is still attached but not really attached to the waterproof layer as such. Faster drying time but requires more prep.
As always there is a trade off between the convenience of having a zero-prep nappy, and drying time. It’s just about finding your own priorities.
That isn’t to say that an AIO doesn’t need boosting. Many (most for us!) do require a booster, and some even a liner too.
