What are your fave beverages to enjoy at a tailgate or party?! Tell me in the comments below!
Knowing which kidney friendly drinks to choose from can be so difficult. Especially when your cooler may be filled with alcoholic beverages and sodas.
These drinks can sometimes fit into a kidney friendly diet in moderation but it’s important you speak with a kidney dietitian and your healthcare team to make sure they are safe for you.
Instead of soda or alcoholic beverages, try more hydrating and kidney friendly options like these👇🏼
Here are my fave beverages to suggest for your next tailgate:
✅Zevia soda
✅Flavored sparkling water like Spindrift
✅Flavored water like Hint
These drinks are more hydrating and contain less sodium, potassium, and phosphorus than soda and alcoholic beverages!
Happy hydrating💚

One of the most common mistakes I see people with CKD make with avocado toast is…
They just have bread + avocado!
This is totally fine every once in a while, but I am sure it probably doesn’t leave you feeling very full and satisfied.
When it comes to eating for your chronic kidney disease, it’s so important to make nourishing & satisfying meals every day!
To make a balanced meal with avocado toast, don’t forget to add some veggies + healthy fats/plant based protein.
Here’s one of my fave recipes to suggest to my clients with CKD:
Ingredients:
½ avocado, mashed
2 slices of your favorite bread (I like dave’s killer bread!)
1 cup arugula
2-3 tomato slices
1 tbsp hemp hearts
¼ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp garlic powder
Directions:
Mash your avocado and spread on bread.
Top with arugula and tomato slices.
Sprinkle with seasonings and hemp hearts.
Enjoy!
Nutrition (nutrition calculated with 2 slices Dave’s Killer Bread):
415 calories
15 gm protein
335 mg sodium
715 mg potassium
14 gm fiber

Save this recipe for when you need an easy kidney friendly meal idea!!
Do you ever stand in front of the fridge, staring, just willing it to tell you what to eat?
This can be so common when you have CKD! You have to keep so many things in mind to manage your kidney disease, knowing what to eat for an easy meal can be tough.
But it doesn’t have to feel that way forever! Check out one of my fave pasta dishes that comes together in less than 30 minutes and is so delicious.
Ingredients:
1 cup zucchini noodles
4 ounces whole grain pasta
3 garlic cloves
½ cup cherry tomatoes
1/2 cup - 1 cup pasta water
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp black pepper
½ tsp garlic powder
1 tsp oregano
1 tbsp nutritional yeast
Directions:
Cook pasta according to the package. While the pasta cooks, saute your zucchini, tomatoes, and garlic in olive oil on medium heat for about 5 minutes or until softened.
Once pasta is done cooking, remove 1 cup of pasta water and set aside.
Lower heat to low heat and add your cooked pasta to your zucchini and tomatoes. Then, add your pasta water until creamy. Mix well.
Lastly, stir in spices. Enjoy!
Nutrition (serving size is about 1 1/4 cups pasta):
350 calories
48 gm carbohydrates
gm fat
10 gm fiber
13 gm protein
800 mg potassium
Remember, everyone’s nutrient needs are different!
Feel free to customize this dish based on your individual needs. For example, if you are following a low potassium diet, try swapping out the zucchini for broccoli or cauliflower. If you need more calories, try adding more olive oil or pesto. If you need more protein, try adding tofu or more nutritional yeast!
Enjoy! 🍝🍝🍝

Can you enjoy coffee on a kidney friendly diet?!
Yes, you can! 🎉🎉🎉
Here’s a few things to keep in mind:
✅Coffee contains caffeine & sometimes caffeine can increase blood pressure/heart rate. Always check with your doctor and/or kidney dietitian before consuming. If you need to limit caffeine, try decaf coffee or herbal teas instead!
✅What goes in your coffee matters! Do you like adding creamer and/or sugar to your coffee? Be mindful of your portion size and opt for creamers/milks with less added sugars and no phosphate additives. I like to suggest unsweetened almond milk or natural bliss creamers.
✅Coffee contains potassium, so be mindful of your portion size if you need a potassium restriction! 1 cup of coffee contains 116 mg of potassium. If you like to enjoy a few cups of coffee/day, this can add up quickly.

Do you love a cookout?! 🍔🍔🍔
When it comes to grilling/eating cookout foods, there are so many options out there! Burgers, hot dogs, BBQ chicken, ribs…the list goes on and on!
If you have CKD, you know that these options can be higher in protein and sodium, which isn’t always helpful for CKD.
With that being said, grilling up some delicious food or having a cookout is totally doable with CKD!
Here is how you can have a more kidney friendly cookout:
Try swapping your beef or turkey burgers for a veggie or bean burger. I love to recommend Dr. Praeger’s or Hilary’s brand burgers!
Try choosing lower sodium sauces and condiments to help you stick to your sodium goals for the day.
Don’t forget to add in some fruits and veggies. Maybe you enjoy a fruit salad or some grilled veggies on your plate.

Picture this…
You open your fridge & stare at what’s inside. You immediately start to get stressed out because you have no clue what to make to eat.
If this sounds like you, you are not alone!
It can be so hard to figure out what a kidney friendly meal looks like with CKD. But it doesn’t have to feel stressful forever!
Choose a protein food, carbs, healthy fats & veggies and throw it all together.
Try out this easy meal idea for CKD & let me know what you think:
Kidney friendly stir fried rice and veggies -
-1 cup cooked rice
-1 egg or ¼ block tofu, crumbled
-1 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
-½ cup zucchini
-½ cup snap peas
-½ cup onions
-1 tbsp coconut aminos (I like to recommend coconut secret brand)
-½ tsp ginger
-½ tsp garlic powder
Directions:
Saute veggies in a pan with oil on medium heat.
As veggies are sauteing, add cooked rice and egg/tofu. Cook until the egg is fully cooked. If you are using tofu instead of egg, cook for about 5 minutes or until lightly browned.
Add coconut aminos and spices and mix well.
Enjoy!

What is your fave cheese to enjoy?! I love mozzarella! Tell me yours in the comments below!
So many of my clients love cheese but aren’t sure how to fit it into their kidney friendly diet. Can you relate?
In order to understand if cheese fits in a kidney friendly diet, it’s important to first understand what nutrients are in cheese!
Cheese can be high in protein, sodium, and potassium so that means portion size is key when enjoying your fave cheese on a kidney friendly diet.
3 lower sodium cheeses are swiss, fresh mozzarella, and ricotta. These can be great swaps for higher sodium cheeses like feta, parmesan, and cottage cheese!
A standard serving of cheese is about 1 ounce of cheese or the size of 2 playing dice. Remember, portion size is key!

What is your go-to smoothie?! Tell me yours in the comments below!
Yes, you can still enjoy smoothies when you have CKD! Here’s a few things to keep in mind:
🥤Smoothies can count as a fluid so if you need a fluid restriction with CKD, be mindful of your portion size!
🥤Even though protein powders can be tempting, they really aren’t a necessary add when you have CKD! You are probably getting adequate protein without them! It may be helpful for your kidney health to leave them out of your next smoothie.
🥤Try adding veggies to your smoothie for added fiber and kidney protective benefits. I like to add riced cauliflower, frozen zucchini, or spinach/kale because you can’t taste them as much!
🥤Don’t forget to add healthy fats and some plant based protein to your smoothie to help control your blood sugars.
My favorite recipe for smoothies is: your fave fruits/veggies + healthy fats/plant based protein (hemp seeds, peanut butter, flaxseed meal, chia seeds) + liquid of choice.
Happy smoothie making! 🥤🥤🥤
