John W. Jones portrait unveiling at the Arnot Art Museum. Jones was born enslaved and escaped to Elmira, New York where he became a station master helping nearly 800 enslaved people find their way to freedom in Canada. He was also well known for his grace and deep compassion in the burials of confederate soldiers at Woodlawn Cemetery. We are celebrating 100 years here at the Chemung County Historical Society with a new exhibit. part of this 100 year exhibit is this 1923 LaFrance fire engine. This year we traveled back to the 1920s. The featured car was a 1928 Franklin Airman Series 12B. Each year we host an event with a different car and a different decade. There is a raffle with a top prize of $10,000.00 and 3 best costume prizes where the winners receive $500.00, $300.00, or $200.00. The 1928 Franklin Airman was manufactured in Syracuse New York. Named in honor of Charles Lindbergh's flight in the "Spirit of St. Lois".
