Today, I honor Grammy Award-Winning Spoken Word Poet, DJ, Community Activist, Master Songwriter, Musician, Artist, Producer, Director, and Educator.
Malik Yusef Jones, aka the WordSmyth.

Malik is from the southside of Chicago, known as the Wild 100s.

Malik rose out of those surroundings to become a 17-time Grammy award-nominee, five-time Grammy award-winner, and six-time ASCAP award-winner for both Pop and R&B.

Malik Yusef began performing spoken word in open mic venues in the late 1980s.

I first met Malik Yusef
in 1994 when he was a part of my Black History Month production Black Evolution In Motion, which was presented at Spices Jazz Bar in Chicago’s River North area.
He had his first big break in 1997 when Ted Witcher, director of the film, Love Jones, recognized his poetry and hired him to coach the film’s lead actor, Larenz Tate. In 2002, Yusef, along with jazz saxophonist Mike Phillips, collaborated on the song “This Is Not A Game,” which was selected by Michael Jordan to appear on the CD.

As one of Kanye West’s most trusted contributors and friends, Malik co-wrote and contributed to every track on The Life of Pablo; he co-wrote eight out of the ten songs on, Yeezus; he is a writer and artist on Cruel Summer featuring Kanye West and the rest of his G.O.O.D. Music team.

Malik was Executive Producer of the album HOME (Heal Our Mother Earth), featuring Common, NE-YO, Elle Varner, Karmin, Raheem DeVaughn, Crystal Waters, and various dynamic artists. The album HOME launched People’s Climate Music in 2014, a project of the Hip Hop Caucus.

Malik is signed to the world’s largest music publisher, Universal Music Publishing.

Malik has built and maintained incredible industry connections and relationships with the likes of Katy Perry, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, and Adam Levine.

I am proud to say that Malik Yusef Jones is considered family to me, and no matter how big his career has gotten, he always refers to me as his Big Brother.

Please make plans to go see “My Brother” MALIK YUSEF at Chicago City Winery- Friday, August 25, 2023, at 8:00 PM

In honor of 50 years in Hip Hop, I’m going to pay homage to icons & legends that I’ve met over the years.

Today, I honor Entrepreneur, Record Executive, Rapper, Actor, and Record Producer Sean John Combs, aka Puff Daddy, Puffy, P. Diddy, or Diddy.

Combs worked as a talent director at Uptown Records before founding his record label, Bad Boy Records, in 1993. Combs has produced and cultivated artists such as the Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Usher.

Combs' debut album, No Way Out (1997), has been certified seven times platinum. The album was followed by Forever (1999), The Saga Continues... (2001), and Press Play (2006), all of which were commercially successful. In 2009, Combs created and produced the musical group Diddy – Dirty Money; they released their successful debut album Last Train to Paris, in 2010.

Combs has won three Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards and is the producer of MTV's Making the Band. In 1998, Combs founded the clothing retailer Sean John. He was nominated for the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for Menswear Designer of the Year in 2000 and won in 2004. He has been the brand ambassador for vodka retailer Cîroc since 2007 and co-founded the television network and news website Revolt in 2013. In 2022, Forbes estimated his net worth over 1 billion dollars.

Diddy was highly approachable and down-earth when we met; I’ve enjoyed being in his company several times.

My two favorite songs by Diddy: All About the Benjamins, Been Around the World
