👏 As our Legal Director and one of our new Co-Executive Directors, Lisa oversees CCIJ’s work creating and supporting strategies to fight for the liberation of immigrants in detention through direct representation, litigation and advocacy. From the Bay Area to the detention centers in California’s Central Valley (✊🏽shut them down!) to Tijuana, Lisa’s dedication to collective liberation is unwavering and we are so lucky to have her on our team and as a co-leader of our organization.

If you haven’t heard as much from the amazing Lisa Knox recently… it’s because she is on maternity leave! We are so happy for her and her family 💛.

👀 On September 7th, we joined partners in the California Mandela Coalition, including dozens of survivors of solitary confinement, in Sacramento to call on our state Senators to pass AB 280 with a super majority to place comprehensive limits on solitary confinement in California and ban its use for specific populations such as pregnant people, those under 26 or over 59, and people with disabilities.

🔥 The words of solitary survivors who spoke at the press conference, open mic and during visits with legislative staff were so powerful!

✨ In her five years with the CCIJ team, Katie has been an amazing advocate for people in immigration detention as well as an incredible team member and mentor to new attorneys. Last week the Dublin Prison Solidarity Coalition held a press conference in Oakland to announce the filing if a class action lawsuit by 8 survivors of sexual abuse by prison guards at FCI Dublin against the federal Bureau of Prisons.

Formed in 2021, the Dublin Prison Solidarity Coalition is a partnership of people currently and formerly at FCI Dublin and their supporters. Coalition members include the ACLU of Northern California, the California Coalition for Women Prisoners, the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice, Dolores Street Community Services, and Rights Behind Bars.

Survivors of staff sexual abuse & retaliation at FCI, Dublin–a federal women’s prison in Dublin, CA–and CCWP are preparing to file a class action lawsuit against the BOP, FCI Dublin officials, and several individual officers.

After filing the suit, survivors, lawyers and community organizations will hold a press conference.

Survivors endured horrific abuse & exploitation at the hands of prison employees. Despite public awareness & multiple investigations, FCI Dublin has failed to remedy the systemic problems that created a culture of sexual violence and shielded perpetrators from accountability.

We join survivors in calling for the release of those still incarcerated, protection from deportation, community based care for survivors, and an end to retaliation and abuse inherent to the U.S. carceral system, among other basic demands.

⚕️The HOLD Act, or the Health Oversight and Leadership in Detention Act, became California state law in 2021 and is a powerful tool for expanding worker protections and state & local oversight of private ICE detention operators.

💻 On July 12 we joined Immigrant Defense Advocates in hosting a webinar to share information about the HOLD Act.

✊ State laws can have the power to advance efforts to fight back against torture, abuse and medical negligence in ICE detention when the federal government fails or refuses to do so. The HOLD Act is an example of one such law that has resulted in important, concrete wins for the wellbeing of immigrants detained in California.
