The Ontario government is reversing a controversial land swap plan for the largest greenbelt in the world.
Ontario's Greenbelt is a vast 810,000-hectare area of protected farmland, forest and wetland stretching around the Greater Toronto Area, from Niagara Falls to Peterborough. It's meant to be permanently off limits to development.
Last year, the province took 7,400 acres of land in more than a dozen sections out of the Greenbelt, with plans to build 50,000 homes. But Premier Doug Ford has faced heavy criticism since.
Ford announced the reversal at a news conference in Niagara Falls, Ont. The decision comes after weeks of pressure and two minister resignations.

Tensions are growing between Canada and India, and now India has suspended visa services for Canadians.
The BLS Indian Visa Application Center in Canada said in a statement: "Due to operational reasons, with effect from 21 Sept. Indian visa services have been suspended [until] further notice."
Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs, said the government will be reviewing the situation on a regular basis, but Canada needs to examine its "growing reputation as a safe haven for terrorists."
This move comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Parliament earlier this week that there were "credible allegations" of Indian involvement in the assassination of Sikh independence activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Surrey, B.C., in June.

Migrants, including undocumented people, students and refugees, marched in cities across Canada Sunday – in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and elsewhere – to demand permanent residency status for all.
"Without permanent resident status migration, undocumented people are facing massive exploitation at work, are denied life-saving treatments in health care, live in daily fear of deportation and the pain of family separation," said Sarom Rho, an organizer with Migrant Workers Alliance for Change.
The protest comes after Canada's temporary foreign worker program was labelled a "breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery" by a United Nations official earlier this month.
Tomoya Obokata, UN special rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, called on the federal government to give all temporary foreign workers a pathway to longer-term or permanent residency.

There’s a lot of debate right now about the topic of gender identity in schools and whether parental consent should be required if a child under 16 wishes to go by a different name or pronouns at school.
All of this may lead to families having conversations at home about gender identity. Here’s what parents should know about handling such a sensitive subject.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s popularity amongst millennials and gen Z has dropped since he was first elected in 2015. In an interview with CBC Front Burner host Jayme Poisson, Trudeau acknowledged that the past few years, since the pandemic hit, have been particularly hard for younger Canadians.

Thousands of books at school libraries in a district near Toronto have been removed as part of a new weeding process intended to ensure library books are inclusive, but which in practice appears to have led some schools to remove titles solely because they were published in 2008 or earlier.

Mahsa Amini's death while in the custody of Iran’s so-called morality police last September set off months of protests against the Islamic Republic's rule.
Hundreds of people, including minors, have been killed in the last year and thousands have been arrested, according to rights groups. Iran carried out seven executions linked to the unrest.
Emboldened by the protests, more women in Iran are rejecting the hijab and living their daily lives without it — despite it still being illegal.
The country is now preparing to harden its religious laws. For women not wearing headscarves, it could mean up to 10 years in prison.

About 3,000 people in Edmonton have no permanent home, according to Homeward Trust, a local organization that provides support to people experiencing homelessness.
Ian Patrick Dowdall is one of them. He worked as a chef before an injury left him unemployed. Now he lives in an encampment.
“Every day is survival, that’s it,” he said.
As public complaints about encampments in Edmonton have increased, a city spokesperson says that more than 1,000 have been dismantled in the first six months of this year.
CBC Edmonton spent a day visiting several encampments and gathered stories from some of the people who live there.

Have you been on a nightmare flight?
Investigative journalist Habib Battah was on an Air France flight from Paris to Toronto when he noticed a foul smell.
Thinking it could be from his cat carrier, a flight attendant gave him gloves and some wipes, but he soon realized that the problem wasn’t his two cats.
It turned out to be human blood and excrement.
“It’s a hazard,” he said.
According to Air France, a passenger from the previous day had a “hemorrhage” and a cleanup crew was requested. The airline apologized and offered Battah water, a $500 voucher and offered to pay to get his cats washed. Battah declined.
In cases like this, what do airlines owe passengers? Let us know in the comments.

The union representing WestJet cabin crew is demanding an apology from the airline after Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre spoke on the public address system of a recent flight.
But Poilievre says it’s the union who should be apologizing.
His campaign-style speech lasted about 45 seconds and was met with laughter and cheers from passengers.
Many but not all of the people on board were delegates going to Calgary after a PC convention in Quebec City.

More than 8,000 people from North Africa have arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the last week. That’s more than the island’s population.
Migrants could be escaping economic and social turbulence in places like Tunisia, Libya and Sudan. The spike of people has overwhelmed the island's resources.
The United Nations refugee agency says it's vital that people be relocated.
"It's imperative to move people off the island because the resources there, the capacity, is so limited," said UNHCR spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh.
He also says that people arriving on the island were traumatized and in need of medical care.
“It is hard to identify a single factor behind this recent spike in migrant arrivals on Lampedusa,” Saltmarsh said.
