It’s the Filmmaker’s Rollercoaster!🎢
It’s that feeling of incredible elation when you finish a job you’ve been working your butt off for. In my case, the first in a long series of videos for an E-Motor company. I’m super super insanely proud of the video and the work.
And then…moments later, the crash.
You find yourself having thoughts like:
Where’s the next job coming from? When will it start? How long til I’ll be paid? Can I float on what I’ve already made til then? Did the mail come yet? Why did they push that meeting? Why didn’t that one prospective client call back yet?
Now, MOST of this is in jest. Pretty quickly, you learn to ride the waves, keep swimming, and keep working. But there’s a little part of that Celebration/Depression that plagues all creative endeavor.
So whatever you’re working on today, keep working. And if you’re looking for that next project, let yourself enjoy a moment of rest.

He has a perfectly calibrated sense of the pacing, movement, and rhythm of a scene, and then how that pacing, movement, and rhythm will affect and fit into the overall film.

I haven’t directed a feature film yet. But the lesson still holds. Because whenever I direct, whether it’s an interview or B-Roll or a mood piece, or a narrative film, I am always thinking: What do I want onscreen during every moment? And how will those pieces connect with one another, build upon one another to achieve the ideas or emotions I want the audience to receive?
If you haven’t seen Chazelle’s films, “Whiplash” and “La La Land” are absolutely brilliant, and even his slightly less successful movies (my opinion only) still contain moments and entire sequences that are dazzling and gripping and moving.

What do you do for your business that isn’t actually doing your business?
This year, my focus has been on networking and raising my business’ profile. So I joined the local Chamber of Commerce, as well as a more intimate networking group. I’m committing to creating more regular social media content, and I’m about to begin running online ads.
In addition to that, I’ve been purchasing new gear, testing that gear, oh, and creating new contracts and video offer templates for new clients.
All that on top of creating killer video content for my clients — which is the stuff I really LOVE doing.

1️⃣ B-Roll - take 15-30 seconds of B-Roll from your business, put some music under it, and boom, you’re done.
2️⃣ The Process - This is what it sounds like: show us the PROCESS to create what you sell. Whether it’s a croissant, furniture, or the best plumbing service around, you can show how you do what you do.
3️⃣ The Product Video - if you sell a product, set it up and film it. How would you display it to customers walking in? Do that, film it, and write 2 sentences about why your ideal customer needs it and loves it. HINT: The more products you offer, the more videos you can easily create.
4️⃣ Quote Video - Take some of your B-Roll and add a favorite quote of yours over it, something that means something to you and could be why you started this business. And if you can’t think of anything, that’s a great opportunity to look some up.
5️⃣ A Quick Tip - Whatever your business, let your customers know a tiny morsel of wisdom or insight you’ve learned over the years.

If I’m gonna make quick little vlogs or do TikTok or IG videos, I’ll use my phone.
If I’m gonna record longer videos, I want something more robust, like (to stick w/ Sony) the A7siii or the FX3.
What about you? At $2200 it’s certainly one of the more cost effective cameras out there.

Check out this inexpensive version of a “Volume” like they use on “The Mandalorian,” like they used in the new Batman movie and many other places.
I think this works. I’m not sure how many other applications there are for something like this, aside from something out of focus in the background. But you could definitely shoot plates of whatever you’re working on, so that, after the fact, if you need to go back, and re-shoot, you’ve got some wiggle room, you can get a close-up or two. I dig it.

Just had meeting w/ client where they were adding lots of things to their video, and the video had really gotten away from its original vision.
Do you get annoyed? Push back? Just let it go and do it and not say anything?
No.
You ADDRESS respectfully, by noting that there are some new things that are being added that are different from the original vision.
Then, REMIND them of the original vision for the project.
Lastly, ASK them which direction they want to go in? New direction or return to the original idea.
Then, you have a conversation, share your thoughts, and they make the decision and you all move forward.
That’s collaboration.
