Releasing wild animals like Nelson the lion into our Shamwari reserve is always emotional for our co-founder Dame Virginia McKenna 🧡 Nelson spent the final 5 years of his life, comfortable and happy, until he passed away peacefully in 2022. It was a privilege to give him a happy retirement after his years living in a cramped zoo enclosure

We’ve been trialling artificial eyespots on livestock in Meru, Kenya. This is to deter predators like lions. As well keeping livestock safe, it also protects lions from retaliatory attacks - a win-win that helps people and wildlife coexist!

In 2009, we rescued one-eyed lioness Bella from a freezing winter in a crumbling Romanian zoo and transported her to her lifetime home at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi.
When we rescued Simba from a circus they were introduced and they lived together until they passed away in 2017. After such terrible cruelty in their earlier years, we’re thankful they had such love and care in their final years.

It’s simply not true that elephants thrive in zoos. That’s why we’re calling for an Elephant-Free UK. That means prohibiting the breeding of captive elephants, and stopping importation to phase out the keeping of captive elephants. Sami lived at our sanctuary at @shamwari_private_game_reserve since 2001, when he arrived as an abandoned cub with his siblings. It has been a privilege to care for him and love him for 22 years.
