#otd Henry Bolingbroke, eldest son of John of Gaunt and his first wife Blanche of Lancaster, ascended the English throne as Henry IV on September 30, 1399. He overthrew and imprisoned his cousin Richard II and usurped the throne. Henry's reign was far from peaceful; he saw a number of rebellions (including Owain Glyndŵr), plots, and even assassination attempts. #otd William, Duke of Normandy, and his army left France in the prelude to the Norman conquest of England on September 27, 1066. A series of skirmishes and battles culminated in the Battle of Hastings the following month. And, as we know, English history was forever changed.

#otd English forces under Edward the Black Prince defeated French forces under King John II in the Battle of Poitiers on September 19, 1356. This was the second major military engagement and the second English victory in the Hundred Years' War.

A decisive victory came at the hands of English longbowmen.

In the battle's aftermath, John and other nobles were captured. The Treaty of Brétigny, signed in 1360, ceded large tracts of French territory to Edward III and set John's ransom. England, however, would later lose their territorial gains.

#otd The Dutch-born painter Sir Peter Lely was born in Soest, Westphalia, a city in what is now Germany. Born as Pieter van der Faes, Lely came to England in the 1640s during the reign of King Charles I. He became the court painter, earned status as a naturalized British subject in 1662, and lived in England for the rest of his life until his death in December 1680.

Lely is especially known as a talented portraitist. He favored painting females and often emphasized their bosoms in his works.

His "Windsor Beauties" series ranks among his most prominent collections of works. Created at the behest of Anne Hyde, Duchess of York, the series depicts prominent noblewomen in the court of Charles II such as Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, and Henriette Anne, Duchess of Orléans.

#otd The worst terrorist attack on American soil occurred on September 11, 2001. In the span of a few hours, two planes crashed into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and a diverted one into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3000 tragically lost their lives.

There are no words to describe the impact this chain of events has had on world history or the American psyche. All I can say are words that have resounded around the Internet today: never forget.

#otd On August 26, 1596, Frederick V of the Palatinate was born in Deinschwang, Palatinate to Frederick IV and Princess Louise Juliana of Orange-Nassau.

On February 13, 1613, he married Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of King James VI and I of England.

Though a political marriage, both seemed happy with each other. Frederick and Elizabeth bore 13 children. The descendants of his daughter Sophia followed the Stuart dynasty as kings of England.

The Bohemian Confederacy elected him as their king on August 26, 1619. Frederick reluctantly accepted, though this put him at odds with the Holy Roman Emperor. It's suggested that the prince accepted because Elizabeth wanted to hold the title of queen.

Frederick and Elizabeth ruled over Bohemia for only a year. They lost their crowns in November 1620 due to political and military machinations. They became known as the 'Winter King' and 'Winter Queen'.

Frederick died of illness on November 29, 1632.

#otd Lady Katherine Grey was born on August 25, 1540 at Bradgate Park in Leicester. She was the daughter of Lady Frances Brandon - herself the daughter of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon - and Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk.

Additionally, her elder sister was Lady Jane Grey, the so-called 'Nine Days Queen' because she sat on the English throne for nine days in 1553 before Mary I claimed the throne.

On May 25, 1553, she married Henry Herbert, Lord Herbert. The marriage was annulled later after Lady Jane Grey was deposed.

Katherine then secretly married Edward Seymour in December 1560 without royal consent. As a possible heir to the throne, she was required to ask permission from the monarch.

As a result of her actions, Queen Elizabeth imprisoned Catherine in the Tower of London while Seymour served overseas.

Upon his return, the queen also sent Seymour to join his wife. Whilst imprisoned, Katherine gave birth to two sons: Edward and Thomas.

After Thomas's birth, she spent the remainder of her life separated from her husband and eldest son. She died on January 26, 1568 in Yoxford, Suffolk.
