idk how it is with softshells but they need to be able to dry off or they can develop shell rot. invest is a proper basking spot and heat lamp.

It’s a really bad idea to have anything rough, or with sharp edges in with a softie, they get scraps easy, and infection

He needs a place to completely dry off or his health will deteriorate. This is a turtle necessity. What you had before was better.

If you give him a heat and UVB light he will be more likely to utilize a dock.

they dont climb out unless they have a heat lamp to bask like a normal turtle would

You'd hav to get a heat and UVB lamp. U can get a bulb that's two in one it's called the powersun! For a turtle I'd recommend the 80 watt

Just a tip, Turtle’s should have a dry dock to bask in. Having their bottom be in a shallow water for too long can cause redness on their bellys.
