Has the gift of tongues ceased, or does God still distribute it through His Spirit to those He chooses to glorify Him in the way He wants?
Well, the Bible says that not everyone has it, and that there are different parts of Christ’s body, each having a particular gift and function.
”Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?” (1 Corinthians 12:30)
The gift of tongues of which we read in Acts 2 when the believers received the Holy Spirit was manifested in that particular way to glorify God’s name and to reach out to those people surrounding them at that time – Parthians, Medes, Elamites, etc.
Nevertheless, the scripture teaches us that the gift of tongues is mainly used for personal edification.
“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.” (1 Corinthians 14:4)
It is a way in which the Spirit of God connects with us, scrutinizes the depth of our soul and heart, and helps us to pray in a way that the exact need we have is presented in front of God. Therefore, this gift is also for personal edification and not only for reaching out to people from a foreign nation. Otherwise, why would Paul ask for someone to interpret them when we pray in tongues amid the congregation? (1 Corinthians 14:27)
Chapter 14 of Corinthians doesn’t fully prohibit using the gift of tongues. It just tells us to use it with understanding and to be more interested in reaching out to people than edifying ourselves only. Nevertheless, if we have this gift, we can use it when praying by ourselves or together with other believers in the midst of certain services according to the situation.
To me, 1 Corinthians 13:8, when saying that whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease, talks more of the gift of the tongues in the personal life of the believer, and not that the gift will cease in itself.
There are many different parts in a body, and if we are believers, we need to practice what we have received from God and serve the rest of the community and those in need.

We decide whom to follow and who to be friends with. Surround yourselves with persons who can give you a good and godly example in life.
All depends on our heart's intention. If we look for God and we look to meditate on His word as this Psalm says, then we will automatically look to be surrounded with good persons living a godly life.
We all need to ask God to keep on working in our hearts, so that we can be able to discern right from wrong and also which people to be surrounded with.

The heart is the most essential organ in the human body. Without it we cannot live. It pumps and takes the blood to all parts of the body. It maintains in life the rest of the organs. In this sense we can say that "out of it spring the issues of life".
The same is in the spiritual life. The heart represents our inner being, which is the most important for God. Out of it spring the issues of life. It just needs to be with the Spirit of God and His word. Then it will pump and take this life to all the rest of the organs, which represent all the different areas of our life.

Here, we see two people's prayers: a Pharisee and a tax collector. The Pharisees used to boast and exalt themselves for the righteous life they were living. The tax collectors instead never used to live a religious life, and they were never considered to be religious persons. Here we see both of them praying. The Pharisee was thanking God because he was not a sinner like the rest of the people and like that tax collector. Even though this parable speaks of personalities living at that time, we can still have the same attitude today.
We are not Christians for what we do not do and because we don't commit certain sins like that tax collector. We are Christians because of the grace of God and because we have received His forgiveness. It all starts at the cross by asking for forgiveness, and this cross and its humility should accompany us all the way along.
The tax collector was a sinner who didn't know God, nor pretended to know Him, and he didn’t expect much.
He asked for forgiveness, and I am sure he changed his lifestyle after he received it. Still, it all started with the forgiveness. He would never be able to without that. After receiving God's gift, we begin to be grateful and look at and value things differently.
The key to living a really righteous life before God is to start acknowledging we are sinners, and that we need His redeeming grace to be able to change our ways.
