Sadly the population of white-nosed coatis is decreasing due to habitat loss and hunting, as they are sadly seen as pests. At Battersea Park Children’s Zoo we’re proud to have one of only three white-nosed coatis in the UK and hope to raise awareness of this incredible species.

70 harvest mice have been released into the wild! 🐭 🌾
We are proud to announce that on Saturday 6th May, harvest mice born into the breeding programme run by BPCZ and our sister site The New Forest Wildlife Park were reintroduced into restored habitats in Ealing, West London, in partnership with Ealing Wildlife Group. Last weekend an incredible milestone was passed - over 1000 harvest mice have now been released into the wild as part of this project.
Surveys carried out year on year have shown that these releases are proving to be a success, with harvest mice becoming established within the ecosystem and restoring biodiversity.
We are even more excited to share that the harvest mouse release site will soon be home to another reintroduced native species! Eurasian beavers, one of the most impactful, native ecosystem engineers will be returning to Ealing for the first time in 400 years, later this year! This collaborative project will give people access to a rewilded landscape and experience firsthand these animals’ incredible abilities to create nature rich wetlands.
Our native species are increasingly under threat, making the fight against biodiversity loss in our habitats across Britain a priority. Harvest mouse populations have been in decline across the country due to habitat loss for many years, making conservation projects like this even more vital.

Today Peludo the six- banded armadillo was treated to a whole quail! As you can see, he loved it!
Six-banded armadillos are omnivore, feeding on carrion, small invertebrates and fruits. They have an excellent sense of smell but poor eyesight, and will often hunt within the burrows of other animals!

Our three capuchin monkeys will never breed due to their being ranked as least concern by the IUCN, however we will look after them for the rest of their lives after they were rescued from an unsuitable environment. Lunch for our Feas Flying Tree Frogs include some juicy live crickets! 🐜
These frogs are found in Thailand and Vietnam, but sadly are struggling due to human pressures on their habitat. This species can be found living alongside humans in some of their natural habitats where humans have urbanised the landscape; they are sometimes found hiding in people’s bathrooms! 🚽

Say good morning to Alonso, our white-nosed coati! As a diurnal animal, Alonso is active during the day and sleeps during the night, however male white-nosed coatis tend to continue to forage for food after dusk, unlike females, and so, have a little more trouble waking up in the morning 😴
Once awake Alonso is very active, spending the day foraging for bugs and going on look-out duty from the top of his tree! 💚

Janice had a great time today playing in her new enriching ball pit! The bright colours help stimulate her inate curiosity, which in the wild helps caracara be bold, efficient scavengers 🧠
Sadly, only 500 breeding pairs of striated caracara remain in the wild, as they are hunted as pests. Here at BPCZ we hope to play a part in their conservation, as well as educate the public on these unique birds of prey 💚

Keith and Sheila, our laughing kookaburras are currently rearing young in their nest box, however, coparenting doesn’t always go to plan!
Kookaburras pair for life, always returning to the same nesting site. They work together, raising young, and older siblings will help defend their parent’s territory. When a laughing kookaburra marks it’s territory it lets out a distinctive sound, unique to them. This sound, is just like a human laugh!
