After days of relentless rain the sun shone on Saturday to welcome visiting teams to North Mayo for the first Shannon Medals GAA Tournament in almost 30 years, as part of the Ballina 2023 celebrations.

Spectators were treated to a fast-moving feast of competitive senior football games played across three pitches, featuring St Eunan’s of Letterkenny, An Charraig Mhór Naomh Colmcille of Tyrone, Roscommon Gaels, Mayo Gaels, Knockmore GAA, and tournament hosts Ballina Stephenites. St Eunan’s of Letterkenny swept the boards in an impressive display to win all five of their games, just pipping the home team. It was a fantastic day and night!

The @Mayo.ie Western People West of Ireland Women's Mini Marathon in Ballina is now OFFICIALLY OPEN FOR REGISTRATION with a special early bird offer!

The event, which was launched today in St Mary’s Secondary School will take place in Ballina for the first time on Sunday, April 30 as part of the Ballina 2023 celebrations. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate!

The 2023 Mayo.ie Western People West of Ireland Women's Mini Marathon is a partnership between @MayoSportsPartnership, Mayo.ie, the Western People and Ballina 2023, supported by Ballina Athletic Club and Moy Valley Athletic Club. This specially designed scenic 10km route takes in the very best of Ballina, so let’s make it one to remember!

A big thank you to Stuart Garland of Volunteer Ireland for delivering Volunteer Management training to members of the Ballina community and the Ballina 2023 team, supported by Lesley and Vincent from Mayo Volunteer Centre and organised by Ballina 2023 Volunteer Co-ordinator Sheila Garvin.

Stuart shared lots of his own experience of managing volunteers at events of all types, and it was a really valuable and enjoyable session.

Sincere thanks also to Enda, Edel, Ashling and team at telus international ireland on Emmet St for their wonderful hospitality.

It was great to hold our monthly steering group meeting, followed by our training session in this modern and welcoming new workspace, and to meet some of the 200-strong Ballina Telus International team.

Here’s a sneak peek of our first event! Mise en Lumières is an adapted audio-visual light installation by ENTER.black, a French artistic collective dedicated to development of immersive experiences. The installation, which uses light and sound, will be on display at the Humbert Memorial Monument (the Maid of Erin), Humbert St., Ballina, from 6pm to 10pm each evening from Thursday, February 2 to Saturday, February 4.

The event is the first event of a year-long partnership programme, the Year of the French or Bliain na bhFrancach, a collaboration between Ballina 2023, the French Embassy, In Humbert’s Footsteps. Our Youth Programme Open Evening takes place this Thursday, January 26th from 6pm where young people can drop in, chat to the partners and sign up in person, if they haven't yet.

If you are between the ages of 18-24 from Ballina, North Mayo or West Sligo, the Ballina 2023 Youth Programme provides the opportunity to gain experience and training in events, music programming, radio and digital broadcast media, sports training, the arts, community leadership and youth voice.
