Patrick Chiou is the CEO of Upstate General Construction and one of the most successful real estate developers in Albany.
He graduated in 2006 from the University of Albany. After graduation, he went home to Long Island and became a nightclub promoter before he started investing into real estate. Pat’s first investment was a two-family in Albany. Eventually he sold the property and bought others. Now 10 years into his career as a developer, he now has 250 units in his portfolio and is on his way to 1,000 units — buying distressed properties, gutting them and rebuilding them into nice luxury properties.
His advice is to always remain credible, do what you say you’re going to do, and stay confident — sometimes, you just have to fake it til you make it.

It may sound cliche when you hear, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” but it is true. The people we surround ourselves with are the biggest influence on our behavior, attitudes and results. They shape who we are, because they determine what conversations dominate our attention.

You may have heard of some of the restaurants that are included in David Zhao’s (@itsdawei ) diversified portfolio under his F&B holding group — Chubby Cattle, The X Pot, Wagyu House, Niku X, Mikiya Shabu House and more. We’ve seen a rise in contemporary Asian American cuisine, but we all know Asian food was not considered one of the most popular cuisines in America some time ago. When David and his partners wanted to open a hot pot restaurant, they had to take a bet on themselves because they fully believed in what they were doing even if no one else did. David shares with us that no matter what it is that you want to do in your industry, you have to find your own path, build at your own pace, and roll with the punches.

It’s easy for us to doubt ourselves and question whether or not we should speak our minds when it comes to the work that we do. We fear we may come off too direct, too outspoken, or too honest. Michelle Wong, CMO of @Sprinkles , shares a story about her grandmother that heavily influences the way she decides to show up everyday. We must trust our instincts in the work that we love to do. Being unapologetically you and becoming conscious of the pursuit of yourself allows you to live life according to your own rules.
