This morning at Anti-Hustle Art Studio I made a collage about boundaries.
so often the conversation focuses on what we are keeping OUT of our lives by holding boundaries. I think the inverse also deserves our attention. When we say “no” to something, we are saying a “yes” to something else.
A boundary is kinda like an orange peel. On the outside it can be tough and waxy, but the inside that faces us can be soft.
When I hold a boundary of no screen time in the morning, I’m saying no to distraction, anxiety, and beginning my day with the influence of others. But perhaps more importantly, I’m saying a big yes to creativity, slowness, and intimacy with my own life.
What “yes” is your boundaries offering you today ?

Anti-Hustle Art Studio is a gathering space to make art as an act of self-care and community-care.
It’s hard to carve out time to be creative. Capitalism, social media, and hustle culture sell us the lie that we always have to be more productive, monetizing our hobbies, and striving for perfection. This pressure can make it almost impossible to make things ✨just because making things feels good✨
Anti-Hustle Art Studio is a monthly membership where we can reclaim time to express, explore, and play - using creativity as real self-care.Each week there is a new theme and invitations for art, designed by an art therapist. You can attend our live studio time on Zoom or create art at your own pace with inspiration from the project library (150+ prompts!) No art experience required!

After getting a BFA it took YEARS to return to creating in a way that isn’t hitched to perfectionism and my internalized ideas about what “good art” means.
Even as an art therapist, sometimes my inner critic is loud. I compare myself to my classmates who made it big in the art world.
If anyone needs me I’ll be over here with my rhinestones and glitter glue. (and I wouldn’t have it any other way)
I made this portrait of my dog, Pants, at the weekly open studio I run online. Every week I offer a new theme and project ideas because art IS mental health care. 🎨

Aesthetic response = making something in response to an experience 🎨
As an art therapist, I use this process to help me hold the emotions I feel in the work I do; both the exciting AND the challenging. Making art after I work with people makes it possible to move into my life without carrying the residue of what we co-created in session. It helps me to be present for the people I work with. It also supports me in not taking on other people’s emotions after work.
Sometimes it’s hard to put our experiences into words alone. Creating art is a powerful way to care for our mental health. I trust the page to hold my emotions for and with me.
This response art came from a workshop I co-facilitated with @alyseruriani

Art held my rage today:
Twice in two weeks men have ranted at me about the perceived dangers of children being taught about the existence of queer and trans people. The holes in their logic and flimsy efforts to justify their positions made me shake with anger.
They were embarrassed when I revealed my queerness and called them in. I’m a straight passing woman in a relationship with a man. And it’s true that my other privileged identities have largely guarded me from the violence that other queer folks face.
In those conversations my privilege let me go incognito before challenging the homophobia and transphobia. I don’t deserve a gold star for this, mind you.
Today I hosted my weekly therapeutic art group and the theme was “rebellion and resistance.” I took the hour to regulate with watercolor, and rest in my art so that I might have the stamina to continue fighting.

Surfacing from my content sabbatical to share a peek into what I’ve been up to outside my life as an art therapist:
I took a speedy trip to visit my college roommate and see some of the projects she’s been working on. (She’s an exhibition designer and designed THE DALÍ SHOW at the art institute) After we met at art school in Baltimore, she went on to work for museums in DC and Chicago and I moved to Vietnam before returning to Canada for grad school.
Living in a rural town in British Columbia and running an online private practice, my world can feel tiny. It’s easy to forget how much seeing art fills my cup. My mental health is so tied to how often I put myself in the way of inspiration 🎨 and how I tend to my life-long friendships with other artists ❤️

How do we care for our mental health when we choose to be on social media? 📱 This question hits so close to home.
Being a content creator has led me to burnout. The fact that I don’t have the creative energy I used to for content creation makes me feel GUILTY - even though I know this is an era of life where I know my art belongs elsewhere.
What’s helping me is remembering how these platforms are built, going to my own therapist, pouring goodness in the book I’m writing, and also NOT working.
Even making this video, I felt the exhaustion of trying to frame my story in terms of what would receive the most engagement. (Notice the click-bait-y opening line and the question I pose at the end)
So welcome to my creative sabbatical. You might not see much of me around here. I’m celebrating that 🎨
I would love to know how YOU cope with the pressure of being on social media? Leave a comment and let’s hold this question together
