Esports has gained significant importance for school learners in recent years. The list of benefits that video games, especially esports, offers Africa’s youth is extensive. #PlayGamesAfrica will highlight the importance of esports in education, in schools in particular. We hope to see representatives from schools across Africa in attendance this year.
7 Benefits of Esports in Education
Skill Development: Esports can develop and enhance critical thinking, hand-eye coordination, multitasking, communication, and adaptability. These skills are transferable and valuable in academic settings and future careers.
Engagement and Motivation: Many students are interested in video games. Esports allows them to channel their passion into a productive and educational activity. By integrating esports into schools, educators can increase student engagement and motivation, leading to improved attendance, participation, and overall academic performance.
Social Interaction: Esports provides opportunities for students to interact and collaborate with their peers. Whether playing on a team or participating in esports events, students build social connections, develop friendships, and learn valuable social skills. Esports encourages teamwork, communication, and cooperation, fostering a sense of belonging and community among learners.
Careers: The esports industry is growing rapidly and offers diverse career opportunities. By involving students in esports, schools can expose them to potential careers such as professional gaming, game development, event management, marketing, broadcasting, and more.
Technology and Digital Literacy: Esports helps students become more tech-savvy and comfortable with digital tools. As technology becomes increasingly integral to various fields, having a strong foundation in technology and digital literacy is crucial.
Scholarships and Education Opportunities: Esports scholarships are increasing, recognising the value of esports as a competitive and educational pursuit. Excelling in esports could potentially secure scholarships to further education, combining the passion for gaming with academic pursuits.
Inclusivity and Diversity: Esports provides a platform where students from diverse backgrounds can participate and compete on an equal footing. It breaks down barriers and promotes inclusivity by focusing on skill and talent rather than physical attributes. Esports offers opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women, to excel and make their mark in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

7 Ways to Support the LGBTQIA+ Community in the Gaming Industry
Celebrating #pridemonth in the gaming community is a wonderful way to show support and inclusivity for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Here are 7 ways you can show your support :
1. Highlight and celebrate LGBTQIA+ characters and storylines in video games. Recognise games that depict diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Encourage game developers to create more inclusive narratives and provide a range of character customisations that allow players to express their gender identity and sexual orientation. This can include diverse hairstyles, clothing, and pronoun options.
2. Promote and uplift LGBTQIA+ content creators in the gaming community. Share their streams, videos, and social media content. Collaborate with them on projects or sponsor their work to help amplify their voices.
3. Encourage the creation of safe spaces within gaming communities where LGBTQIA+ individuals can feel accepted and supported. Educate allies about LGBTQIA+ issues and foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, and understanding.
4. Organise charity drives or fundraisers to support LGBTQIA+ organisations or causes. Consider donating a portion of game sales or in-game purchases to LGBTQIA+ charities.
5. Host or participate in virtual Pride events within gaming communities. This could include in-game celebrations, tournaments, or live streams dedicated to raising awareness and supporting LGBTQIA+ causes.
6. Encourage organisations to collaborate with LGBTQIA+ organisations to raise awareness about their work and provide resources for the gaming community. This can involve hosting joint events, sharing educational content, or offering volunteer opportunities.
7. Promote the use of inclusive and respectful language within gaming communities. Encourage moderators to enforce rules against hate speech, discrimination, and harassment. Foster an environment where individuals feel safe and respected.
Remember, supporting and uplifting LGBTQIA+ voices should not be exclusive to Pride Month. The above can be done throughout the year to create a more inclusive and welcoming gaming landscape for everyone.
