The Role of Strength Training #1 of 3 – Injury Resilience What is the role of Strength Training? Why do we do it? Or why should we do it? Reason #1 , and arguably the most important reason, is Injury Resilience. It’s a simple one but having athletes available to play week in week out, is the best ability you can give an athlete you’re working with. The best Ability is Availability! By hitting the weights in the gym and targeting identified ‘risk’ areas, we can help mitigate injuries throughout a long and (sometimes) arduous season. The goal should be to build the foundations early in the pre-season, then depending on playing time and level of competition, attenuate decline throughout the in-season period, with the hope to build on the original base the following season. Strength builds resilience. So, get lifting in a planned and periodised way to help bulletproof you for next season. #athlete #youthathlete #athletes #youthathletes #sports #fitness #gym #training #strengthtraining #InjuryResilience #athleteinjury #strength #melbourne #coffsharbour #fyp
3 tips to stand out from the crowd of other interns during your placement You’ve gained a great placement. Now what? How do you stand out from the crowd? How do you empress so much that the organisation can’t not hire you!? See below 3 tips that have absolutely nothing to do with how much knowledge you know in the field: Tip 1: Show up early There is no worse sight than an intern walking through the door rubbing sleep out of their eyes, whilst athletes are just starting their warmup. Arrive before the first athlete, leave after the last on your chosen shift. Simple! Tip 2: Don’t be scared to get involved! I know first-hand it can be intimidating walking into a new organisation. The first couple of weeks, just feel it out. Get used to the facility, the athletes, the program, the flow of sessions. But after that, GET INVOLVED. Chat to athletes, get to know them, build those relationships. Positive rapport with athletes will only help you coach them down the line. We love when our interns are proactive in engaging with athletes and getting involved in sessions. Tip 3: Body language Now you’ll probably think I’m crazy. But I’m a big believer in positive body language, no matter what role you have at an organisation. 3 simple rules our interns follow include: No hands in pockets: You look like you don’t want to be here and uninterested. No phones out: It’s not a good looking when you’ve got a gym full of athletes and the intern is texting their mate. No crossed arms: Some kids can find this intimidating. If you’re standing over someone in the power stance with arms crossed, I can tell you right now you don’t give off friendly vibes. #athlete #youthathlete #athletes #youthathletes #sports #fitness #athletetips #tips #gym #strengthtraining #melbourne #training #fyp
