Hákarl is Greenland shark that has been fermented for months. Greenland Sharks are not your ordinary shark. They can live up to 500 years, eat polar bears 🐻❄️, are poisonous if eaten raw, and blind.
It’s considered an Icelandic delicacy that traces back to Iceland’s early settlers. They used to bury Greenland sharks in the ground for a few months and then let it dry to eat as a source of protein.
These sharks don’t excrete urea like humans do so they have a really strong ammonia smell similar to a staircase in the projects 😕.
It tastes like a rotten hard cheese and pee/ammonia. The smell is so strong that it will actually change the taste of nearby drinks so keep a top over your drink.
I’ll stick to bake and shark but if you eat smoked herring or chitterlings you’ll probably like it. And if you’re in Iceland you have to try it!
